How much caffeine is in Monster Energy?
Checked October 7, 2026 against Monster Energy Company product facts · Half-life model: Institute of Medicine, FDA · Not medical advice
Short answer
160 mg
in a 16 fl oz can of Monster Energy
13 h 23 min
until under 25 mg is left
One can is more than a cup and a half of brewed coffee, and it lasts. At a 5-hour half-life, a 4 pm Monster still leaves about 61 mg at 11 pm, more than a whole can of Mountain Dew.

01Caffeine in every Monster Energy flavor
Monster's own pages state the caffeine for a 16 fl oz can, and most of the range lands on 160 mg: Original Green, Zero Sugar, Juice Monster Pipeline Punch, Reserve, Nitro and Rehab (in a 15.5 fl oz can). The lighter ones are only slightly lighter: Ultra 150 mg, Mango Loco 150 mg, Lo-Carb 140 mg. Choosing "zero" changes the sugar, not the caffeine.
The coffee line is where the numbers jump. Java Monster Mean Bean, made with real coffee and cream, is 200 mg in a 15 fl oz can, and Killer Brew Mean Bean is 300 mg, three quarters of the FDA's daily figure in one can. The Import can is listed at 180 mg per 16 fl oz.

mg per can or bottle as printed on the maker's product facts, checked October 7, 2026. "Cups of coffee" = an 8 fl oz cup of brewed coffee at 96 mg (Mayo Clinic).
02Monster Energy by can and bottle size
Original Green is sold in 12, 16, 19.2 and 24 fl oz cans, but the maker prints mg only for 16 fl oz: 160 mg, or 10 mg per fl oz. At that rate the 12 fl oz can is about 120 mg, the 19.2 fl oz can about 192 mg and the 24 fl oz can about 240 mg. Cans sold outside the US follow local recipes, so check the label on the can you have.

400 mg a day is the FDA's figure for healthy adults, not a target. Calculated rows: maker mg ÷ fl oz × size.

Model: remaining = dose × 0.5^(hours ÷ 5). Half-life 5 h (Institute of Medicine 2001); shaded band = the FDA's 4–6 h.
Monster is where a planning line and a bedtime collide. 160 mg takes about 13 h 23 min to fall under 25 mg, which for a 10:45 pm bedtime means finishing the can by about 9:20 am. Most people will not plan that strictly; the six-hour line from the 2013 trial (finish by 4:45 pm for a 10:45 pm bed) is the floor, and the curve shows what is still left after it.

A 16 fl oz Monster has more caffeine than a 12 fl oz cold brew (about 155 mg) and about two thirds more than an 8 fl oz cup of brewed coffee (96 mg). Ounce for ounce it is a little weaker than coffee, 10 mg against roughly 12, but the can is twice the size of the cup.
06Is 200 mg of caffeine too high, and are two Monsters a day too many?
The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects in healthy adults. 200 mg is half of that: a Java Monster Mean Bean, or one and a quarter cans of Original. Two 16 fl oz cans are 320 mg, under the daily figure, but two 24 fl oz cans are about 480 mg, over it.
Monster's own ingredient page notes that taurine is not a stimulant; the caffeine is what keeps you awake. For sleep the second can is the problem more than the first: a can at 2 pm still leaves about 46 mg at 11 pm, and a second can stacks a new curve on top of what is left of the first.
Pregnancy, some heart conditions and some medicines change how much caffeine is sensible and how long it lasts. Ask a clinician rather than a calculator.
Questions people ask
- Is 200 mg of caffeine too high?
- For most healthy adults, no: it is half of the 400 mg a day the FDA cites. It is a lot to have late in the day, because about half is still in you five hours later. Pregnancy, heart conditions and some medicines lower the sensible amount; ask a clinician.
- What Monster has 300 mg of caffeine?
- Java Monster Killer Brew Mean Bean: 300 mg in a 15 fl oz can, according to Monster's product page. That is 75% of the FDA's 400 mg daily figure in one can.
- How much caffeine is in a 500 Monster?
- 500 ml is about 16.9 fl oz. The US Original Green is 10 mg per fl oz on Monster's page, so 500 ml of the US recipe would be about 169 mg. 500 ml cans are mostly sold outside the US with their own recipes, so the printed label on that can is the figure to trust.
- Is 2 monsters in a day bad?
- Two 16 fl oz cans are 320 mg, under the FDA's 400 mg a day for healthy adults. Two 24 fl oz cans are about 480 mg, above it. For sleep, the timing of the second can matters most: the later it is, the more is still there at bedtime.
